Savage Monsters Store

The Savage Monsters Store is always falling onto the back burner. I stumbled onto someone's Big Cartel store and liked it. I just started playing with it a bit, trying to figure out what I want to do. Ultimately, the Savage Monsters Store will have a cleaner appearance.

Something like this, but with many more products.

Spam

I've been using Savage Monsters as my primary e-mail address for about 8 years now. And I still get surprisingly little spam compared to my hotmail account. Savage Monsters attracts a much higher quality of spam, like this one from Turkey.

From the Archives

I don't think this really happened. But it very well could have.

"A Decade of Feelings" Progress Report

Over the past 2 days, I've scanned another 433 images. 20 sketch books down, 90 to go. The scanning is time consuming, brainless work, so I'm ok with that. It's going to be a totally pain weeding through thousands of images, cropping them and arranging them into book form. I just have to remind myself that it'd be cool to have that book.

Curiouser Still

When I got back home from my Best Buy adventure, my storage cabinet (which I've never used) was open. This is the place where I originally encountered the homeless man. This time, there was a bike lock, a bicycle inner tube and and empty Capri Sun box in there. Very strange.

Medusa's Head

After photographing Medusa's head several times, it vanished sometime on Friday before I got home. Mysteriously, another Medusa's head appeared by my car when I went to Best Buy this afternoon. The mysterious cat and mouse game with the Secret Society of the Homeless continues...

Plug for My 9-5...

Fast Company did an article on American Greetings Interactive and Kiwee. I'm looking forward to seeing the print issue. When they were doing the article, they requested a bunch of photos, one of which was "Dave Savage." I'm not sure if they really wanted a photo of me, or just my office space. I'm interested to see what made the cut.

The online article is here.

The Head of Medusa

The Head of Medusa...photographed at 8:45 am today (on top), compared to it being photographed at 6:20 the previous evening (on bottom). Note the change in color and filling of the bags. I believe the Head of Medusa to be the trash of a homeless man, hung on a hanger, which in turn, is hung on a chain link fence. Possibly it's some sort of totem to ward of evil spirits or part of a strange religious ritual.

Culture Jamming

The Conspiracy Grows Thicker

This morning as I passed the homeless hut, there was a guy in a black track suit by his car with the door open talking into a walkie talkie. Not sure if he had anything to do with the homeless guy or not. And he wasn't the guy in the Volvo who sometimes parks next to the homeless hut and talks to the homeless guy. During my last encounter with the Volvo, I noticed it doesn't have license plates. What is going on in this nefarious world of the homeless???

Homeless Hut

A few months ago, I discovered a homeless man sleeping in the storage compartment in my carport. At the time, I was new to the apartment complex and still moving in. I thought I'd take another look in the storage compartment and maybe figure out what I'd keep in there. The first time I looked in the compartment, it was totally empty. On the second occasion a week or two later, there were a bunch of blankets and stuff in there. My initial thought was, "who put all this old camping gear in here?" So I started rooting around in the blankets only to discover that a man was curled up in there sleeping. Startled, I just said, "uh, sorry." And closed the door and walked off. I was going out of town the next day and didn't want to deal with it. When I came back, there was a padlock on the compartment. I assume someone else found the guy sleeping there and kicked him out.

Over the past few months, I've seen boxes of stuff and pieces of cardboard by the boarded up Burger King. And I saw the guy from my storage unit in the vicinity. Soon, he started building a shelter. Over the past 2 weeks, it's grown to be almost as big as my apartment.

"A Decade of Feelings" Progress Report

So far, I've been through about 10 of my 110 little sketchbooks, scanning some of the better items. Not sure how many will actually make the final cut into the book. You can see the stuff I've scanned so far here.

Star Jaws

I got Star Jaws for my birthday or Christmas at the height of the Star Wars and Jaws crazes. I loved it as a kid. Now, rediscovering it and seeing Will Eisner's name on the cover, it's no mystery why I thought it was so great. Glad I still have it. I don't think I've ever seen another copy of it.

Not a Winner

I'm developing new "edgy" content at work. I think this might be over the line.

A Decade of Feelings

I've been drawing in these little sketchbooks for the past 10 years. Usually, if I'm drawing in public and someone asks me what I'm doing, I'll reply, "I'm drawing pictures of my feelings." That usually scares people off, or at least gets an interesting reaction. I've got over 100 sketchbooks, so I go through about 1 a month. I'd like to scan some of the better drawings and make a book called "A Decade of Feelings."

Haircuts and Street Art

I ran across a bunch of cool street art this morning on my way to get a haircut. I wish I had a better camera than my cell phone camera on me, but at least I had that. I was so excited about seeing the street art, I forgot to ask for a mohawk and got a normal haircut instead. Oh, well, maybe next time.

I Heart Mangled Bodies

When I was in high school and first getting into horror movies, I made a sign for my locker that said "I heart Mangled Bodies." I always thought it'd make a good t-shirt design.
